Thanks Kim, Jeanne, and J - I'm starting to feel vindicated in my rebellion against the Goodreads reviewer! :)

I like that line because I can imagine the Christmas tree cookie cutter we had growing up, and then pretend the soundtrack is whispers and screams. Some of those Goodreads reviewers are a bit pretentious. Cheers to your inaugural podcast! I think I only heard a few mutters and door slams.

I remember that Christmas tree cutter... now a whispers and screams soundtrack would be more Halloween. ;) Thanks bro!

Woods Full of Large Dark Cut Outs:

LIKED:

A casual first glance at a woods full of large dark cutouts, wouldn’t get a second glance from many. However, as we become acquainted with Gloria, we understand her curiosity and imagination wouldn’t allow her to see mere cutouts. She saw them as a silhouette or camouflage of something to be explored. She steps into the woods with much of the same anticipation she would have in opening the cover of a treasured pop-up book filled with delicate cutouts. As we watch her enter, she curiously begins to look for the hidden tabs that are always neatly nestled on the cutout page. They must be found and opened to reveal clues and details that give the cutout life and definition. So, we watch as Gloria and Ms Jones walk hand-in-hand lifting the tabs and turning the pages to see what mysteries (and possibly monsters) are lingering behind the dark cutouts camouflaging the heart of the woods.

I believe the appearance of the woods full of large dark cutouts is essential to its security. Through the facade of being one dimensional cutouts, the woods maintain their obscurity and security from civilian travelers. However, if your curiosity is strong and you begin to turn the pages and lift the tabs as Gloria did, the woods will reveal their secrets and you are in for an adventure.

This is pretty fantastic. When you take the cutout metaphor and develop it to the point of tabs and clues in a pop-up book, you've got a handle on why so many people glance at the woods and walk on by while an entire secret society is just a mile or two away.

I really like that line, it makes my think of a paper cut out that you can glue on to something and like a silhouette of trees against a sunset.

Hey, a paper cutout is what I had in mind when I wrote the scene! Great minds...

The line works for me! I think it’s a great concrete image—I’ve often seen trees back against a sunset sky that look like cutouts.
