As summer ends and school starts, we’re back with another full-length answer to a frequently asked question. If you missed the first edition, you can catch up here. The most recent version of today’s question came from Hunter:
Do you think there'll ever be a series and maybe some movies for the Casey Grimes series? I really hope so it would make a great movie or a great show. Even my brothers would like it. They don't like anything I do. But they would definitely love that.
We get it, Hunter. Convincing brothers to like the same things we do—which would obviously be the best for everyone—is not easy, that’s for sure. I hope the books get made into movies just to get your brothers’ heads right. I have four brothers and we can’t even agree on basic stuff like the best sport or the right way to eat barbecue.
But this post is about movies, not brothers.
And the short answer to the question is, It’s Possible.
For that to make sense, we’d better talk about how books become movies or streaming series. Get ready to learn a little about Casey Grimes and Hollywood.
First, the books needs to be popular enough. Casey Grimes is not a worldwide phenomenon at this point. That’s when a series becomes so big, like Percy Jackson or Harry Potter, that it is impossible for it not to become a movie. However…Casey Grimes is popular enough for studios to be interested. That is thanks to readers like you who’ve purchased over 180,000 copies of the books over the last couple years. So this achievement is unlocked. ✔️
Second, the author need a literary agent to bring his books to movie-makers and say, Hey, you ought to buy the rights to this amazing story and make it into a film. A good agent is tough-minded, good at business, and has connections in the movie industry. Luckily, I signed with an agent earlier this summer. My agent, Scott, works for Buchwald Agency and has connections in film. Maybe I’ll tell you that story later—it’s kind of a good one. So this achievement is unlocked. ✔️
Third, the agent needs to find a studio interested in the books—or maybe more accurate, find a good studio and make them interested. The agent acts like a salesman for the stories. He says, Hey, here’s why these would make great films people would love. If a studio gets interested, they sign a deal with the author for the right to make a movie, movies, or series. This is called an option, because they studio might get around to making the movie or they might not. They are only paying for the option to make one. This achievement is not yet unlocked. ❌
Fourth, and you probably saw this coming, a studio that bought an option decides, Enough waiting around! Heck yes, let’s make this into a movie! And that’s when the author and fans start to get excited. That’s when actors get hired, sets and CGI development starts, and pictures of Bog Creeps, treeways, Casey and Gloria start showing up online. As you can see, this achievement is not yet unlocked. ❌
So, will the Casey Grimes books be made into movies? Well, it’s possible. We won’t know until it happens. The good news is that in terms of achievements, we’re about halfway there. For me, the good news is the rest is not my job. It’s up to my agent and any studios interested in the stories.
My job is stay hopeful and pray for good developments. If you like the Casey Grimes stories, maybe you’ll do the same.
If there’s movie news, I’ll let you know.
At the moment, we have a different urgent thing. Can you draw an ancient Sylvan relic? Can you sketch Casey’s sword? Probably, you should give it a try. Here’s the clue you’ll need:
Once you draw Casey’s sword—pencils, markers, crayons, digital, whatever you like—be sure to send your sketch my way so I can include it the next Sylvan Sketches post. Here at the Sylvan Spy (and Vanderhorst Adventure School) we’d love to see what you come up with. Now get drawing!
